Program Description:
The Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Languages and Literatures offers an Advanced Language Study Abroad (LSA+) program in the People's Republic of China.
Classes are taught at a major university, Beijing Normal University, for ten weeks. In addition to its course offerings, Dartmouth-at-BNU gives students the experience of a culture and political climate radically different from their own. Throughout the term and in conjunction with course offerings, trips are taken to places of historical or cultural interest in Beijing and vicinity. There will be two weekend overnight field trips and an 11/12-day mid-term field trip.
Curriculum
Chinese 22, 23 and Chinese 31 (for students who have completed first-year
level of Chinese)
Chinese 31, 32 and Chinese 33 (for students who have completed second-year
level of Chinese)
Chinese 41, 42 and Chinese 43 (for students who have completed third-year
level of Chinese)
*Please note: The third course will also be a sectioned language course, taught entirely by BNU instructors.
Living Accommodations
Students live in a foreign student dormitory on the BNU campus. The dormitory provides a reading room with newspapers, periodicals, major Chinese literary journals, dictionaries, and reference books.
Prequisites (with an average grade of B)
Chinese 3 (or the equivalent)
Chinese 10 (or its equivalent or permission of the director)
Chinese 1, 2, 3 or Chinese 4 (equivalent to 1, 2, & 3) for those taking 22 and 23
at BNU
Chinese 23 (or its equivalent) for those taking 31 and 32 at BNU
Chinese 33 (or its equivalent) for students taking 41 and 42 at BNU
