Program Overview

TamilNadu Aravind is one of the largest eye hospitals in the world and a leader in the delivery of care, as well as training and research. Aravind’s activities range from primary eye care in Indian villages to subspecialty surgery as well as clinical and bench research. Aravind’s success in health care delivery has led to them being featured as a business management case at Tuck, Harvard, and many other business schools. Their excellence has been recognized by being the recipient of the Gates Award for Global Health, the Champalimaud Vision Award, the Conrad N. Hilton Humanitarian Prize and India’s Most Innovative Hospital Award. Dr. Zegans has maintained research collaborations with Aravind since 1997 and has fostered Aravind-Dartmouth interactions including Tuck, TDV/TDI and Thayer. The trip to Aravind will provide a unique cultural and scientific experience for students at one of the outstanding biomedical institutions in the world.

Academics

The eye is unique. Unlike organs hidden deep within the body the transparent nature of the visual axis permits the direct observation of its living tissues without invasive surgery or imaging. Accordingly, the study of vision has yielded many far-reaching biologic insights which will be explored in this course. The course will conclude a 10-14 day visit to Aravind Eye Hospital in Tamil Nadu to present research and observe the delivery of eye care in India.
