Program Overview

McGillEach fall Dartmouth students can attend McGill University in Montreal, Canada, on exchange for the term.

McGill University is one of Canada's best-known institutions of higher learning and one of the leading universities in the world. With students coming to McGill from some 150 countries, the student body is the most internationally diverse of any research-intensive university in the country. McGill is recognized around the world for the excellence of its teaching and research programs.

Academics

Dartmouth students normally take five courses in the McGill Canadian Studies Program. These areas include the French language taught in a Francophone community, as well as courses in anthropology, economics, geography, government, history, literature and culture, and Native American Studies. Of additional importance is the contribution a term at McGill makes toward understanding the sometimes perplexing Canadian-American relationship, as well as providing insight into the conflict between Quebec and English-speaking Canada. Students earn a maximum of four credits.

Applications must be submitted by February 1 of the year before the planned exchange. The same application procedure as for the Twelve College Exchange is in effect. Applicants must have a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.0.

Student Life

In addition to a rich athletic tradition that includes many Olympians and the birth of hockey and football, McGill students are encouraged to participate in the hundreds of clubs, associations and community groups that enrich Montreal and contribute to a vibrant campus life.

Financial Information

Tuition and Fees
Students pay tuition and service fees to Dartmouth. Room, board, and students fees are paid by the student directly to McGill. The cost of transportation to and from McGill is the responsibility of the student. Because the exchange is an official program sponsored by the College, the Dartmouth student does not need to pay the transfer term fee that the College charges to students who study on outside programs during leave terms.

Financial Aid
Financial aid is available for official exchange programs arranged through the College. Financial aid awards are adjusted to reflect the actual cost of the exchange term. However, students will receive no more scholarship assistance than they would have received for a term at Dartmouth. Any extra costs associated with the program will be covered by additional loan assistance.
